“Tom & Jerry,” on the other hand, is a movie that seems to have been made by people who don’t understand the history, true nature or appeal of their iconic characters.Since we’ve already knocked out Tom’s Shoulder Devil, I guess we have to talk about the kinder and more logical figment of the cat’s imagination.

During their classic period, from 1940-67, they starred in 161 short cartoons, with seven of them winning Oscars. And what’s with the stereotyped Mexican accent for comedic purposes from Peña, a gifted actor who grew up in Chicago?Ĭlassic film fans might remember that Jerry has interacted with live humans before he danced with Gene Kelly in the 1945 MGM musical “Anchors Aweigh” in what was then a groundbreaking mix of live action and animation.īut Tom and Jerry worked best in short subjects, and later, television shows. The two create instant havoc, threatening to upset the wedding and expose Kayla as a fraud.Īnd speaking of elephants in the room, “Tom & Jerry” is pretty culturally inept - I can’t think of many Indians or Indian Americans who might find pachyderms in hotel ballrooms or jokes about turbans amusing. That would, of course, be Jerry, and he is, of course, pursued by Tom, who here is a piano-playing jazz singer. Of course they don’t, because a small mouse, too good for the dingy streets of Manhattan, decides to call the lavish hotel, a sanctuary “for presidents, kings and queens … and Drake,” his home. Kayla and lead concierge Terrence (Peña), along with head chef Jackie (Jeong) are charged with making sure the complex wedding (there will be elephants, after all) runs smoothly. The hotel needs the help because they are hosting the wedding of the century between a super-rich Indian heiress (Pallavi Sharda) and her wealthy American boyfriend Ben (Jost, of “Saturday Night Live”). The plot: Kayla (Moretz) is a scrounger looking for a job she sneaks into one of New York’s most exclusive hotels to try and crash the buffet she ends up getting a job there by stealing someone else’s resumé. If there’s any value to “Tom & Jerry” (in theaters and on HBO Max) at all, it would be as a babysitter for the stuck-at-home under-10 set, allowing mom and dad to sneak out to the backyard a for a little peace and quiet for an hour and 41 minutes. Where: Playing throughout Houston and streaming on HBO Max Rated PG: For cartoon violence, rude humor and brief language Worse still, director Tim Story’s film relegates Tom and Jerry to supporting roles. That’s where Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Colin Jost and Ken Jeong come in, slumming it in an inane mess called “Tom & Jerry” and burdened with a creaky plot that would barely prop up a half-hour sitcom. So Warner Bros., which now owns the property created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in 1940 for MGM, decided to go all “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” on us, and mix live action and animation. Tom and Jerry are two of the most beloved classic cartoon characters - like Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, they are relics from the Golden Age studio era, and decades later still can bring a smile to this overgrown child’s face.īut there is an inherent problem with the concept of a feature film version of their endless cat-vs.-mouse war, and that is they don’t talk.
